Iain R Webb to give a talk on 80s fashion as part of Bath in Fashion 2013 (13-21 April)
Anticipating the V&A’s exhibition ‘From Club to Catwalk’, along with the publication of As Seen in BLITZ: Fashioning 80s Style, the spotlight will be on 80s fashion this year. Who better to comment than Bath’s own fashion expert and author, Iain R Webb. In London at the start of the 1980s, three new style magazines emerged to define an era. It was a time of change: after Punk, before the digital age, and at the dawn of a hedonistic club scene that saw the birth of the New Romantics. On the pages of 'BLITZ', 'The Face' and 'i-D', a new breed of young iconoclasts hoped to inspire revolution. As 'BLITZ' magazine's fashion editor from 1982-87, Iain R. Webb was at the centre of this world. His images manipulated fashion to explore ideas of transformation, beauty, glamour and sex. The magazine's arresting, subversive fashion pages, and its profiles of disparate designers and creative types, let the imagination run free. Iain R. Webb has gathered the memories of those involved including Boy George, Princess Julia, Jasper Conran, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Katharine Hamnett, Marc Jacobs, Stephen Jones, Calvin Klein, Vivienne Westwood, and many, many more. Style icon, Princess Julia and Iain R Webb who were both key members on the 80's New Romantic club scene, discuss Ian’s new book, As Seen In BLITZ: Fashioning 80’s Style (to be published May 2013) and the decade that gave the world the stylist, the Iron Lady and gender bending. Princess Julia is a celebrated DJ and contributing editor to i-D and GQ Style. Iain R Webb is an award winning writer (The Times, Vogue, Harpers and Queen, Elle) and Professor of Fashion at Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins. He is also Professor of Fashion at Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins. Date: Wednesday 17 April Venue: The Loft Time: 7.00 pm Tickets: £12 Booking: bathinfashion.co.uk or 0844 847 5256 |

Moments before the Flood nominated for the Prix Pictet award
Some good news for one our photography books: “Moments before the flood” has been nominated for the ‘Prix Pictet’, one of the world’s leading photography prizes. See following link: http://lejournaldelaphotographie.com/entries/7406/arles-2012-prix-pictet-the-nominees
Moments Before the Flood, is a visual and photographic investigation into how we will handle a possible flood. Within the text Carl De Keyzer wonders how Europe is preparing itself for a possible rise of our sea levels and how insufficient these measures appear to be. The author doesn't want to photograph the disaster, but the 'waiting for the disaster to happen'. In his photographs he captures the obscurity of the unknown and the unsure. The photographs presented in this book are monumental, both in beauty and in resolution. Carl De Keyzer used the latest technique (65 million pixels) to create intriguing images, with a highly David Lynch-like atmosphere.

Peter Blake designs Brit Award trophy
Sir Peter Blake, renowned British designer and icon in the music business, has been commissioned to redesign 2012’s Brit Awards Statuette.
In taking the gauntlet from last year’s designer, Dame Vivienne Westwood, it is clear that the event’s organisers are choosing designers with not just an iconic style, but whose designs are synonymous with the British music scene. Sir Peter’s previous creations for British music artists have included covers for The Beatles, Oasis and Paul Weller.
The actual design of the statuette will be under wraps until the awards show in February, but in an interview with the BBC, Sir Peter has revealed that it will feature his ‘signature’ symbols– the star, heart, half a rainbow and a target. Brits chairman David Joseph has called the design ‘incredible’.
ACC’s Peter Blake is part of our award-winning design series. You can read the BBC’s article and listen to Sir Peter’s interview with BBC Radio 5 Live here.
